Mr. James C. “Jimmy” Murphy, Jr., 83, of Swainsboro passed away Saturday evening, August 26, 2017 at his residence following an extended illness.

            Mr. Murphy was born April 25, 1934 in Swainsboro, Georgia to the late James Cecil Murphy, Sr. and Lydia Kight Murphy. He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Shirley Johnson Murphy; sister, Sara Evelyn Hayes; son-in-law, Steve Temples. Mr. Murphy was appointed United States Marshal Southern District of Georgia in 1977–1982 by his lifelong friend and former President Jimmy Carter.  He served on the State Board of Corrections from 1968–1976 and the State Democratic Executive Committee.  Mr. Murphy was a charter member of the Georgia Peanut Brigade and he served 12 years with the Georgia National Guard.  Mr. Murphy was a retired carpenter, a building contractor and he served as President of Murphy, Canady, Temples Construction Company.  Mr. Murphy was employed with the Emanuel County Sheriff Department from 2007 – 2017.   He was a member of First Baptist Church Swainsboro and the Jimmy Morgan Sunday School Class.

            Survivors include his wife, Sue Murphy of Swainsboro; daughter, Mary Anne Temples of East Dublin; granddaughter, Amanda Anne Temples of East Dublin; great grandson, Cameron Daniels of East Dublin; sisters, Mary Kent (Dana) of Swainsboro, Jonnie Boulineau (Billy) of Swainsboro, and Tessie Greenway of Bartow; step-daughter, Michelle P. Freeman (Trey) of St. Simons Island; step-son, Mitchell W. Powell (Jill) of Watkinsville; one step-granddaughter; two step-grandsons; several nieces, nephews and friends.

            Funeral Services will be held at First Baptist Church Swainsboro at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 29, 2017 with Reverend Paul Leigh officiating. Mr. Murphy will lie in state one hour prior to service.

            Interment will follow in the Swainsboro City Cemetery.

            The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, August 28, 2017 at Chapman Funeral Home.

            Pallbearers are Bill Boulineau, Phillip Boulineau, Cassidy Kent, Mark Greenway, James Slater, Matthew Milburn, Frank Nasworthy, Jr., John Tapley, and Daniel Edenfield.

            Honorary Pallbearers are Sheriff Tyson Stephens, Lindsey Thomas, Henry Curl, Johnny Tapley, Dessie Davis, Bobby Marsh, Employees of the Emanuel County Sheriff Department, Emanuel County Courthouse, and Jimmy Morgan Sunday School Class.

            In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to First Baptist Church Building Fund,
