Mr. James Walter Morris, Sr., 70, of Swainsboro died Thursday morning, September 12, 2013 at his residence following an extended illness.
Mr. Morris was born in Swainsboro to the late A. W. Morris and Mary Lou Farthing Morris. He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Morris. Mr. Morris lived most of his life in Emanuel County. Mr. Morris retired from the United States Navy and served in the Vietnam War. While in the Navy he received a number of awards, the Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal with Combat, Good Conduct Medals, Navy Unit Citations, National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medals, Combat Action Ribbon, Sea Service Ribbon and Vietnam Medal. After serving in the military he worked for the Georgia Department of Technical and Adult Education in computer technology. Mr. Morris was known for his long distance running in the community. He was a member of Blundale Baptist Church for 4 years.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Carolyn J. Morris of Swainsboro; son, James Walter “Jim” Morris, Jr. of Milledgeville; daughters, Carolyn Tarita Bacon of Chesapeake, VA, Michelle Renee Reed of Charlotte NC; brother, Roy Morris of Swainsboro; sisters, Ruth Johnson of Swainsboro, Patricia McGuire of Carlisle, PA, Shirley McKuhen of Camak and Barbara Skipper of Swainsboro; 13 grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at the chapel of Chapman Funeral Home at 3:00 o’clock Sunday afternoon, September 15, 2013 with Reverend Ray Jenkins and Dr. K. E. McNeal officiating. Entombment will be in the Eastbrook Cemetery near Swainsboro.
Pallbearers are Zoe Lumpkin, Zeb Lumpkin, Craig Ellis Bacon, Andrew James Bacon, Wesley Johnson and Alton Dudley.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, September 14, 2013 at Chapman Funeral Home.
