Roma Jean Greenway Flanders, 79
Roma Jean Greenway Flanders was born on her family’s farm on December 11, 1937, to William “Larsen” Greenway and Eliza Underwood Greenway. She loved every aspect of farm life, from caring for animals to cultivating plants. Her career as a switchboard operator began at the Coleman Hotel in Swainsboro, GA, and progressed into a long and distinguished career at the Southern Bell Company, from which she retired after 30 years of service.
Roma was an intelligent, fiercely independent, beautiful soul; she was a lover of plants, music, and taking care of those she loved. She passed away peacefully in her home on Saturday, May 13, 2017, after an extended illness. Her memory is carried on by her surviving family, including: her daughter, Sherrie Flanders Burke (Michael) of Midville, GA; her son, Sammy Flanders (Denise) of Midville, GA; her grandchildren, Michelle Burke of Millen, GA; April Burke of Statesboro, GA; Henry Moore of Midville, GA; and Amber Burke of Swainsboro, GA; her great-grandsons Aiden Womack of Statesboro, GA and Hank Moore of Midville, GA; and her beloved older brothers, William Rufus “Billy” Greenway of Meansville, GA and Carter Young Greenway (Phyllis) of Griffin, GA.
Family and friends will celebrate Roma’s life with a memorial service on Tuesday, May 16, 2017, at 7:00pm at Chapman Funeral Home in Swainsboro, GA.
