Mr. William “Bill” Winfred Young, Sr., 84, of Garfield passed away Friday, March 2, 2018 at his residence following a brief illness.
Mr. Young was born October 30, 1933 in Homer, Ga. to William Emory Young and Rose Massey Young. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Dorothy Celia Young; daughter, Jan Hamlett; sisters, Willette Buchanan, and Gwinnette Ledwell; brother, Wilton Young. Mr. Young served in the Air Force, where he learned to drive trucks. After his time in the service Mr. Young made a career out of truck driving, driving long distance across the United States, often accompanied by his wife in later years. Mr. Young was devoted to his wife and family, often rearranging his work schedule so he could support his children's extracurricular activities. Mr. Young also shared a love of music with his family and they would often sing hymns together coming and going to church. Mr. Young and his wife were baptized together in the Altamaha River, and he later served as Deacon at Garfield Baptist Church.
Survivors include his son, Bill Young, Jr. of Brunswick, Ga.; brother, Malcolm Young (Elaine) of Ashville, N.C.; sisters, Gale Brafford (Nick) of Gastonia, NC., Linda Williams, and Ann Carroll (Charles); grandchildren, Jessica Young, Kristen Miller, and William Hamlett (Krystle); great-grandchildren, Tyler Williams, Gabriel Miller, Alyssa Hamlett, and Wilan Hamlett; several nieces, nephews, and friends.
Memorial Service will be in the Chapel of Chapman Funeral Home 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 10, 2018 with Reverend Cavin McElroy officiating.
The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 10, 2018 at Chapman funeral Home.
