Mr. Flem G. Cliett, Jr., 94, of Metter passed away Sunday, January 7, 2018 at his residence following an extended illness.

            Mr. Cliett was born December 15, 1923 in Savannah, Ga. to the late F.G. Cliett and Margaret Cliett. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ann Cliett; daughter, Mary Thayer; grandchildren, Clancy Powers and Will Seay; brother, William O. Cliett. After graduating from Benedictine Military School, Flem served with distinction in WWII as a paratrooper. He was part of the battle for Corregidor in the Philippines and was in the unit named Avengers of the Rock. After Corregidor was conquered, he served in Sendai, Japan until his release from the service in December 1945. When he returned home, he immediately enrolled in Springhill College in Mobile, Alabama. Mr. Cliett was married to Ann Marie Murray Cliett and they had 8 children. He was retired from Mass Mutual Life Insurance Company. Mr. Cliett was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. He served on the Metter City Council for a number of years and was active in the community. He was a wonderful son, husband, father and grandfather. He was a fan of Georgia Tech Sports, enjoyed talk radio, audible books, and going to the gym until age 91. He was an avid bike rider for many years and enjoyed riding in BRAG and was a member of Metter Kiwanis Club for many years.

            Survivors include his sons, John Cliett (Kathy), Chris Cliett (Michelle), Paul Cliett (Karen), and Michael Cliett (Adina); daughters Claire Donaldson (William), Cay Meyer (James), and Ann Howell (Socy); 20 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; special caregivers, JoAnn Williams, Veronica Williams, and Staff at Cedar Plantation; special friends, Elon & Jan Flack, Graham Daniels, and Barbara Morris.

             A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 11 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church in Metter, Ga. with visitation from 10- 11 a.m. One of his greatest joys was reading and listening to books.

             In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Candler County Library, 50 South Kennedy St. Metter, Ga. 30439.
