Mrs. Annie Russell-Callum was born on August 29, 1938, in Valdosta Georgia, Lowndes County. She departed her life on Thursday, June 24, 2021, in Morrow Georgia, Clayton County.

Mrs. Russell was born of the union of the late Reverend J.C. and Rosa Lee Owens.  She is the youngest daughter of 12 children. She joined in Holy Matrimony to the late Reverend A.W. Russell where they have one son, Navarro Pierre Russell; daughter-in law Marcia Russell; and two grand-children, Kelli and Navarro Pierre Russell Jr. from Morrow, Georgia.

Mrs. Russell was preceded in death by her brothers, James Owens (Louvenia) of Cashville, Georgia, Jimmie Owens of Cincinnati Ohio, Johnnie Owens of Savannah; sister, Minnie (Warren) Calhoun of Valdosta, Georgia.

Several years later, she remarried the late Mr. Altamont Callum. She leaves behind David Callum (son), Dallas Texas; AnneMarie Deserverines (daughter) Dallas, Texas; Karl Callum (son), College Park, Georgia; Rosie (daughter), Dallas, Texas; Paul Callum; brothers, David Antone Callum of Fort Worth, TX, Paul Anthony Callum of London, England, Karl Andrew Callum of Decatur, GA; sisters, Annmarie Elizabeth Desravines Dallas of Fort Worth, TX; brothers, Leslie Owens (Lila), Edward Lee Owens (Christine) all of Valdosta; sister, Martha Wright (Ronnie) of Valdosta; sister-in-law, Margaret H. Owens of Savannah, Georgia host of nieces, nephews, friends, and love ones.

Annie O. Russell-Callum received a Bachelor of Science degree from Savannah State College, Savannah, Georgia; an M.Ed. degree in Reading Specialist from the University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia, and did further study at UGA. She also received an E.Ds. degree from Georgia Southern College, Statesboro, Georgia. She has received certifications in elementary education, English and literature, and reading specialist.

She worked at East Georgia College in several capacities. She served as Director of Developmental Studies, Assistant Professor of Communication, Minority Advising Coordinator, and Advisor for the Afro American Union. Her teaching experience included Central High School, Screven County High School, and Blakeley Junior High School as a reading clinician. Annie O. Russell-Callum was the first black professor hired to teach at East Georgia College.

Ms. Callum belongs to several honor societies: Who’s Who Among Students in America Colleges and Universities, Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, Kappa Delta Phi Honor Society in Education, Who’s Who Among College Teachers.  Her professional affiliations include International Reading Association, Georgia Council for Teachers of Reading, Regents Sub-Committee on Reading, Advisory Council on Developmental Studies, and Regents’ Testing Committee (writer of items for Regents’ Reading Test).

She is active member of the Roberson Grove Baptist Church in Midville, Georgia, where she serves as co-pastor. She is also a Sunday school teacher, the church historian, and member of the choir. Ms. Callum received an A.S. degree in Theology from Beacon State University in 2005, and a B.S. degree in Theology from there in 2007. She is a licensed minister.

Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 3, 2021, in the chapel of Chapman Funeral Home.  Face masks are required.

Interment will follow at Roberson Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

There will be a walk-in viewing from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on July 1, 2021 and July 2, 2021.
