Dolly Ann Newsome

September 22, 1943 — December 1, 2023

Swainsboro

Mrs. Dolly Ann Newsome, 80, of Swainsboro passed away Friday, December 1, 2023, at her residence following an extended illness.

Mrs. Newsome was born September 22, 1943, in Scott to the late Raymond Curl and Bessie Tant Curl.  She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, David Newsome; brothers, Henry Curl, Jerry Curl; sisters, Ellen Jeter, Wylene Curl.

Dolly was born the 3rd child of 7  siblings on September 22, 1943 & quickly took on the roll of her Mother’s helper. She learned at a very young age to help with chores, babies, and cooking to a family that was growing fast. As a young teen she was determined to get a job in a beauty shop. She was hired to sweep the floors, wash towels & various other chores & she knew she wanted to be a cosmetologist. While working, she met the love of her life, David Newsome and soon thereafter married in July of 1965 and started a family of her own with a son, being born in December 1966 & a daughter in May 1970. With her family complete, she went to Atlanta to take her state board tests to become a licensed cosmetologist in 1975 & opened her own beauty shop in 1980. Mrs. Newsome managed a very successful business until retiring in 2000 to go back to school at Swainsboro Technical College. She quickly earned a degree in Word Processing and worked for Republic Services until 2007. She left to care for her husband until his death in 2010. Since then , she has enjoyed gardening, playing cards, spending time with her children, grandchildren, sisters & brothers.

In 2016, she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and Dementia and struggled to fight the inevitable loss of all that was familiar to her; her precious memories, stolen like a thief in the night. All that she held dear, slowing became  lost & unimportant. She may not have remembered our names, but she always knew we were her people & she loved us every one. Family was everything to her.

Mrs. Newsome is survived by her son, Michael (Missy) Newsome of Kite; daughter, Melissa (Miley) Cowart of Claxton; sisters, Eloise (Billy) Trull, Deborah Alford (Jody Logan), Cherry Allen all of Swainsboro; grandchildren, Brandon (Ashley) Smith, Lauren (John) Kerbo, Lindsey Akins, Dayne (Katie) Cowart; great-grandchildren, Millie Smith, Ace Smith, Ellie Smith, Elizabeth Kerbo; several nieces, nephews, and many friends.
