Dr. Louise Elizabeth “Betty” Moore of Evans, GA, formerly of Stone Mountain, GA went home

to be with her Lord and Savior on December 23, 2018 at Brandon Wilde Retirement Center,

Evans, where she resided since 2010.

Born to Walter and Marie Moore of Nunez, Ga, on April 10, 1927, Betty received a B.S. in

Business Administration from Georgia College and State University, Milledgeville in 1948. After

a brief career as a merchandise buyer for Rich’s Department Store of Atlanta, she pursued her

passion for teaching and completed a M. Ed in Reading Education from Emory University in

1965. In 1968, she received a Spec. Ed. in Curriculum and Supervision from the University of

Georgia before returning in 1971 to receive a D. Ed. in Reading Education.

Dr. Moore enjoyed a lucrative career in education where her desire was to instill a love for

learning, especially reading, in children and adults. She taught grades one through four and some

secondary commercial subjects for Cobb County, Marietta City, and DeKalb County Schools

before assuming the position of Assistant Director and eventually, Director of DeKalb County

Reading Center. In August 1983, she was promoted to the DeKalb County Board of Education as

Assistant Superintendent for Instructional Services and Supporting Programs. She completed her

career in this position while DeKalb County Schools were ranked 2nd in the nation for

education. Upon retirement, Dr. Moore volunteered as an adult literacy teacher.

In addition to serving as an educator, Mrs. Moore served on the Board of Directors for Fern bank

Science Museum. She enjoyed hosting Bridge parties and continued to play until last year. She

was a member of Smoke Rise and Mountain Shadow Community Clubs.

As an active member of Stone Mountain United Methodist Church, Betty served in many

capacities including Sunday school teacher. She was also an active member of many professional

and academic organizations including, Kappa Delta Pi, Phi Kappa Phi, Kappa Delta Epsilon,

Alpha Delta Kappa, as well as several local, state, and international reading associations and

state and national associations for education supervision and curriculum development. She was

also, a member of Association for Childhood Education and DeKalb and Georgia Associations of

Educators.

Preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Walter “Jack” Moore, and her husband of 58 years,

Robert “Kelsey” Moore, Betty is survived by her sister-in-law, Mildred Moore of Swainsboro,

her niece, Nancy (Barry) Mauldin of Appling, and her nephew, Tim Moore of Swainsboro, in

addition to three great-nieces, Abby, Emily, and Kelsey Mauldin of Appling, and one great-nephew,

Cody Moore of Appling.

The family will receive friends at 3:00 pm, Saturday, December 29 in the Chapel of Chapman Funeral Home, 427 N. Main St. Swainsboro, GA with a funeral

service following at 4:00 pm. Pallbearers are Tim Moore, Cody Moore, Lige Moore, Courtney

Terwilliger, and Barry Mauldin. John Terwilliger will deliver the committal.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff and residents of Brandon Wilde

Retirement Home for welcoming Betty into their family for the last 8 years. They also express

their sincerest appreciation to the Pavilion staff at Brandon Wilde for the exceptional care and

love they extended to Betty during her final days.
