Mr. Hyland Edward Hurst, 85, of Midville passed away Wednesday night, January 20, 2016 at University Hospital in Augusta following an extended illness.
Mr. Hurst was born October 20, 1930 in Midville, Ga. to the late John Henry Hurst and Bridie Watkins Newton. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Martha E. Hurst, and his twin grandchildren, Justin and Olivia Hurst. Mr. Hurst began his successful career training with local carpenters, then worked on the construction of the Clark Hill Dam and, later, the Savannah River Site. He continued his employment in Kansas assisting with the construction of missile silos before settling in his home community of Midville, Georgia where be began a successful career as an independent contractor and home builder, having built homes for many prominent members of the community. He was a member of Union Grove United Methodist Church near Midville, Georgia, where his family had attended for several generations. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, and greatly enjoyed spending time with his family at home.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Sara Hurst of Midville; sons, Sonny (Mary) Hurst, Johnny (Cindy) Hurst, and Al (Peggy) Hurst all of Midville; grandchildren, Katie (James) Clay, Kristy Hurst, Zeke (Macy) Hurst, Zeb Hurst, all of Midville, and John (Tara) Hurst of Waynesboro; great-grandson, Gage Hurst of Midville; mother-in-law, Minnie Lee Johnson of Millen; several nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services will be in the Chapel of Chapman Funeral Home 2:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon, January 23, 2016 with Reverend Lee Pettis and Elder Tommy Rountree officiating. Graveside service officiated by Reverend Randy Carnley.
Interment will follow in the Union Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 pm. Friday afternoon, January 22, 2016 at Chapman Funeral Home.
Pallbearers are Gary Spence, Ronnie Spence, Carson Cross, Roger Johnson, Jimmy Womack, and Joey Burch.
