James R. (Jim) Nix, 87, born in Ft. Payne, Alabama and a resident of Twin City, Georgia passed away on November 4, 2026, at Meadows Hospital in Vidalia, Georgia after a short hospitalization. He is preceded in death by his parents J.B. and Louise Nix as well as his older brother Wendell.
He is survived by his brother, Kenneth Nix (Joyce), their children: Kenneth Jr., Valerie Nix, Marlena Whitney, a sister-in-law Katherine Nix, her children: James Shufelt Jr., Carlyn Wade, Rodney Nix, Donna Nix, and his son Johnny Conner.
Jim grew up in a family that loved the outdoors. Growing up in Kingsport, Tennessee, close to the Smoky Mountains National Park, it was a common thing to camp in the mountains during the summer, hiking up and enjoying the mountains. Jim maintained that love for nature, obtaining a bachelor’s degree in biology from East Tennessee State University. Jim’s working career began as a General Science and Biology teacher in the Paulding County, Georgia system. Jim moved on to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources in Richmond Hill, Georgia and then as a District Fisheries Biologist at Metter, Georga, living in Twin City, Georgia.
Growing up in an Auburn family and attending Auburn set Jim on a life-long course as an Auburn fan but unlike some others, this is not what defined him. Jim grew up in an environment where one’s word was their bond, one avoided even the appearance of evil, and one had a reverential fear of God.
Jim may have been a quiet man, but he was always a gentleman and would never seek to profit from someone one else’s misfortune nor would he let you profit from his. During his life he lived through a failed marriage. This was tragic but as his adopted son John Conner would say, he never ceased providing moral and practical support for him, materially improving his life.
He treated his job as a statement of trust in him, and he would never forsake that trust. He didn’t let life’s misfortunes stop him. He did not understand those who were cavalier about their duties. He felt a duty to support his local church and take on whatever task he could help with. He was a long-time member of Twin City United Methodist Church. There are many examples of his work, especially with the youth of the church.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, November 13th, 2026 at 11:00am at the Twin City Methodist Church with Rev. Randall Smith officiating. The family will receive friends for an hour prior to the service.
Rest well, Jim, you will be sorely missed by those of us who remain.
