Mr. Jessie R. “Sonny” Morgan, Jr., 81, of Metter passed away Tuesday morning, December 26, 2017 at Memorial Hospital following an extended illness.
Mr. Morgan was born March 1, 1936 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to the late Jessie R. Morgan, Sr. and Edith Tansley Morgan. He was preceded in death by his parents. After graduating high school Sonny attended spring training in Auburndale, Florida but shortly after he realized his love for Baseball wasn’t as strong as his love for his best friend Mary “Pup” Sutton who he married, and she blessed him with 3 children. Mr. Morgan lived most of his life in Candler County where he was a County Commissioner for 32 years, he also drove bus # ‘s 166 and 79 for 35 years with Candler County Board of Education where his passion was driving the Metter Football Team. He was a farmer for many years where he loved taking care of his farm and his animals. Mr. Morgan was a member of Metter Lions Club and Mt. Olive Primitive Baptist Church of Aline.
Survivors include his wife, Mary F. “Pup” Morgan of Metter; son, Sonny Morgan (Barbie) of Swainsboro; daughters, Phyllis Anderson (James E.) of Reidsville, and Penny Morgan of Metter; grandchildren, Kelci Marie Anderson, Agie Elizabeth Anderson, Ben Anderson (Ariel), Allie Elaine Anderson, Jesse “Jess” R. Morgan, IV., Blythe “Sunni” Morgan, and Dawda Njie Morgan; great-granddaughter, Macie Elaine Anderson; several nieces, nephews, and friends.
Funeral Services will be at Metter Primitive Baptist Church 2:00 p.m. Friday, December 29, 2017 with Elders Richard Davis and Mike Newman officiating. Mr. Morgan will lie in state one hour prior to service.
Interment will follow in the Mt. Olive Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Aline.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, December 28, 2017 at Metter Primitive Baptist Church.
Pallbearers are Dawda Njie Morgan, Garrett Wilcox, Vernon Ownbey, Rodney Lee, Eddie Williams, Benjamin Brock, and Sutton Kemp.
Honorary Pallbearers are Metter Lions Club, Steve Williams, and Solomon Clay.
