John Vernon Sikes

Mr. John Vernon Sikes, 91, of Garfield passed away on Tuesday, October 11, 2022, at his home, surrounded by family, following an extended illness.

Mr. Sikes was born January 21, 1931, in Garfield to Hardy Newton Sikes, Jr. and Erna Johnson Sikes. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Virginia Covington and Patsy Covington. Mr. Sikes retired from the U. S. Air Force after 22 years of service, and from the U.S. Postal Service after 18 years of service. He was a member and deacon of Garfield Baptist Church, and served his community as a mayor of Garfield, as a member of the Garfield Volunteer Fire Department, and as a member of the Ridgeway Masonic Lodge #104.

He is survived by his wife, Juanita Sikes of Garfield; son, John Gregory Sikes (Martha) of Charlotte, NC; daughter, Cindy Ford (Raymond) of Powder Springs; grandchildren, Andrew Sikes (Becky) of Smithfield, VA, Ashley Dean (Donovan) of Lexington, SC, Rachel Ford and Evan Ford, both of Atlanta; great-grandchildren, Harper Sikes, Hudson Sikes, Avery Sikes, Ellianna Sikes, Camden Dean, Connor Dean; sister, June Ellen Clark of Garfield; several nieces, nephews, and many friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, October 17, 2022 at Garfield Baptist Church in Garfield, Ga. with Reverends Franklin Sasser, Bob Conley and Thomas Simmons officiating.

Interment will follow in Hebron Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Sunday, October 16, 2022 at Chapman Funeral Home.

Pallbearers are Andrew Sikes, Evan Ford, Donovan Dean, Wesley Clark, Steven Clark and Adam Johnson.

Honorary pallbearers are Jimmy Cowart, James Carlton Cowart, John Bussell, Jimmy Womack and David Mills.

The family has requested flowers for the funeral service or donations to be made to Garfield Baptist Church at PO Box 175, Garfield, GA 30425 or PruittHealth Hospice at 667 South Main St., Swainsboro, Ga 30401 in remembrance of Mr. John Vernon Sikes.
