LTC Margaret Bell Thompson USA RET
Lieutenant Colonel Thompson 96, died Monday, March 30, 2026 at the Holy Spirit Retirement Home in Sioux City, IA. The staff there said she was the sweetest person.
An article in the Brenau College newspaper said "Would you like to meet one of the sweetest most liked girls on the Brenau campus? “Moogie Thompson”, as she was affectionally known by her friends and family.
She was born on June 7, 1929 IN Mitchell, GA, to the late Linwood Thompson and Mary Kelley Thompson. She grew up in Swainsboro, GA and graduated in the Swainsboro High School Class of 1946. She attended and obtained her degree from Brenau College in Gainesville, GA in 1950 . She taught Health and Physical Education at West Fulton High in Atlanta, GA for several years.
She served her country in the United States Army and became a Commissioned Second Lieutenant in 1956 in the Army Medical Specialist Corps where she took a one-year Physical Therapy Course. She spent twenty years in the Army, being stationed in San Antonio, Fort Chafee Arkansas, Columbia, SC, Walter Reed in Washington DC, Korea, Ft. Eustis VA, Fort Campbell, KY, and El Paso TX. She retired in 1976 and then worked part time in Jesup, GA and El Paso, TX. After visiting an Army friend in Sioux City, IA, she relocated there. They traveled throughout the US and Canada; Margaret was 80 years old when they drove the Alaska Highway. She was an accomplished and loving woman.
She is preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Christopher Kelley Thompson, and a sister-in-law, Jane Thompson.
She is survived by her brother, Linwood Thompson of Griffin, GA, her best friend and caregiver for many years, Retired Colonel Janet Jolin, and several nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.
Interment will be private.
Chapman Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements for Ms. Margaret Thompson, 96, of Sioux City, IA.
