Mr. Richard Riley Johnson, 77, of Kite passed away Saturday morning, February 21, 2015 at the University Hospital in Augusta following an extended illness.
Mr. Johnson was born December 14, 1937 to the late George Johnson and Mary Lizzie Dickens Johnson. He was preceded in death by his son, Rick Johnson; brothers, Kenneth Johnson and Aaron Johnson; sisters, Katherine Tapley, Dorothy Nobles and Grace Reynolds. Mr. Johnson was a life long resident of Johnson County. He retired from Life of Georgia Ins Co after 30 years of service. Mr. Johnson was a founding member of the Dixie Caravan for 35 years, broadcasted on the radio for 20 years with his show called Stroll Down Memory Lane. He had a love for the mountains, gardening and singing. Mr. Johnson was a member of the Kite Church Of God in Kite.
Survivors include his wife, Patsy L. Johnson of Kite; sons, Michael (Rhonda) Johnson of Scott and Junior Johnson of Kite; grandchildren, Anna Johnson of Kite, Alana Johnson, Mikey Johnson, Kyle Carmichael and Cody Carmichael all of Scott and Patsy Kay Johnson of Dublin; brother, Rayford Johnson of Swainsboro; sister, Martha Lynn Rowland of Wrightsville; several nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services will be held at the Kite Church of God at 11:00 a.m. Monday morning, February 23, 2015 with Reverend Allen Meeks officiating. Mr. Johnson will Lie in State one hour prior to service.
Interment will follow in the Gumlog Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery near Kite.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday evening, February 22, 2015 at Chapman Funeral Home.
Pallbearers are Oliver Tapley, Keith Johnson, Joey Hood, Delton Lampp, Stanley Mills and Alford Johnson.
Honorary Pallbearers will be employees of Life of Georgia, Dixie Caravan members and employees of Smith Clinic.
