Mr. Rufus H. “Tump” Herrington, 74, of Kite passed away on July 18, 2026, at Emanuel Medical Center. He was born on February 25, 1952, in Dublin to the late Arthur Herrington and Louise Shepard Herrington.
Mr. Herrington is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Sue Herrington; brothers, William Herrington, Lee Herrington; sisters, Harriett Taylor, Joann Williams.
Rufus “Tump” Henry Herrington was a devoted father, grandfather, veteran, and friend whose kindness and love for his family left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. Throughout his life, Tump was known as a caring, selfless man who was always willing to lend a helping hand or offer a kind word. His gentle spirit and generous heart made him someone people could always count on.
Tump proudly served his country in the United States Army, a chapter of his life that reflected his sense of duty, honor, and commitment. He carried those same values throughout his life, showing unwavering love and dedication to his family.
Nothing brought Tump more joy than spending time with the people he loved. Whether sharing stories, enjoying a family gathering, or simply being together, those moments meant the world to him. He also found peace in the simple pleasures of life. He loved spending time fishing, and relaxing while watching television.
To his family, Tump was more than a father and grandfather—he was a source of love, strength, and comfort. His life was a reminder that kindness, compassion, and the time we share with those we love are what truly matter. Though he is deeply missed, his memory will live on through the countless lives he touched and the love he gave so freely.
Tump’s legacy of service, compassion, and devotion to his family will never be forgotten. His family will forever cherish the memories they made with him and find comfort in knowing his love will remain in their hearts always.
He is survived by his daughters, Melissa Herrington of Swainsboro, Becky Wilson (Richey) of Douglas; granddaughters, Laci McRee, Alana Herrington; several nieces, nephews, and many friends.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, in the chapel of Chapman Funeral Home. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service.
Interment will follow in Swainsboro City Cemetery.
