Shirley Elaine Claxton

Ms. Shirley Elaine Claxton, 71, of Swainsboro passed away Wednesday, December 28, 2022, at Emanuel County Nursing Home following an extended illness.

Ms. Claxton was born February 28, 1951, in Swainsboro to Eddie James Claxton and Mildred Overstreet Claxton. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Eddie Gene Claxton and Franklin Claxton; sister, Geraldine Claxton. Born and raised in Emanuel County, Ms. Claxton was a 1969 graduate of Swainsboro High School. She went on to attend Brewton-Parker College, where she graduated in 1972 with an associate degree in education. In 1974, Ms. Claxton earned her bachelor’s in early/middle education from Georgia Southwestern State University. She ended her college journey in 2000 after graduating with her bachelor’s in special education from University of Georgia. Ms. Claxton worked for 32 years as an educator – mostly in Glynn County. She retired back to her hometown of Swainsboro. Ms. Claxton enjoyed reading, antique shopping, flowers, plants, traveling, and picking up sand dollars at the beach.

Survivors include her sons, Zachary Womack and Christopher Womack, both of Swainsboro; brothers, John Claxton (Brenda), Bobby Claxton (Melissa), and Larry Claxton, all of Swainsboro, Edward Claxton (Elaine) of Nevils; sister, Patsy Fields of Swainsboro; several nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Funeral Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 30, 2022, at United Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Paul Thomas officiating.

Interment will follow in Swainsboro City Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 30, 2022, at United Primitive Baptist Church.

Pallbearers will be Jeremy Claxton, Eddie Mack Claxton, Josh Claxton, B. J. Claxton, Brandon Fields, and Wade Wommack.
