Mrs. Thelma Ruth Slater Johnson, 94, of Stillmore passed away Wednesday afternoon, September 7, 2016 at Emanuel Medical Center following a brief illness.
Mrs. Johnson was born October 25, 1921 in Grayville, Louisiana to the late Millard Slater and Fannie Morris Slater. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Johnson; son, David H. Johnson; daughter, Martha Frances Janzen; siblings, Martha Williams, Welthie Slater, Mary Warren, Fred Slater, Millard Slater, Jr., Frances Slater, Cederick Slater, and Zanc Slater. She was one of nine children. Mrs. Johnson moved with her family to Stillmore when she was 13 years old. She graduated from Stillmore High School in 1939. In 1941, she went to work for Southern Bell in Macon as a long distance operator for three years after which she transferred to Southern Bell in Atlanta where she worked as a secretary in the engineering department for 19 years. Mrs. Johnson and her husband Henry were the owners of Johnson’s General Store in Stillmore where they worked together every day. The store was sold in 1996. Mrs. Johnson especially enjoyed flower gardening. She was a member of the Ladies Club in Stillmore, a volunteer at Emanuel Medical Center gift shop, she was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Swainsboro, and served several terms on the church council.
Survivors include her grandchildren, Jinjer (Mark) Menge and Daron (Monica) Janzen all of Minneapolis; 5 great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, and friends.
Funeral mass will be held at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Swainsboro at 11:00 a.m. Saturday morning, September 10, 2016 with Father Peter Oyenugba officiating.
Interment will be in the Stillmore City Cemetery in Stillmore.
The family will receive friends from 10 am until time of service Saturday morning, September 10, 2016 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church.
Pallbearers are John Clark, Keith Slater, Regan Slater, Emmett Warren, Jim Beecher, and Dennis Purcel.
Should friends desire, in lieu of flowers, Mrs. Johnson requested memorials be directed to Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Swainsboro or Stillmore Methodist Church in Stillmore.
