Mr. Virgil Cecil Rainey, Jr., 51, of 201 N. Railroad Ave. Garfield died Friday morning, December 21, 2012 at his residence following an extended illness.
Mr. Rainey was born in Millen but moved to Emanuel County where he attended ECI. After graduation, he obtained a Masters degree in School Administration. He taught Agriculture in Candler, Jenkins, and Tattnall counties for 26 years in the public school systems. Mr. Rainey was a member of the Georgia Vocational Agriculture Teacher Association and Past President. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge in Millen. Mr. Rainey served as a city councilman and was elected mayor of Garfield in 1996 until present. He was a member of the Garfield Baptist Church.
Mr. Rainey was preceded in death by his father, Virgle Cecil Rainey, Sr.; brothers, Jimmy Dan Proctor, Wayne Allen Proctor, and Jimmy Elton Proctor; sisters, Katie Scarboro and Bonnie Proctor.
Survivors include his wife of 26 years, Leigh Rainey of Garfield; mother, Jean Rainey of Twin City; son, Christopher Aaron (Robin) Rainey of Garfield; brothers, Loyd Henry Proctor, Daniel Webster Proctor, and Gene Watson (Becky) Rainey all of Twin City; sisters, Edith (Felix) Gavidia of Miami, FL., Rita Lindsay of Swainsboro and Donna White of Twin City; several nieces & nephews.
Funeral services will be held at the Garfield Baptist Church at 2 o’clock Sunday, December 23, 2012 with Reverends Randall Smith and Franklin Sasser officiating. Mr. Rainey will Lie in State one hour prior to service. Burial will be in the Hebron Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday December 22, 2012 at Chapman Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Billy Hughes, Jimmy Clements, Dane Clements, David Clements, John Allen Bailey, David Rainey, Anthony Rainey and Michael Wilkes.
Honorary Pallbearers are the Garfield City Council.
