Betty Claxton Obituary

Mrs. Betty Lee Claxton, 86, of Kite, passed away, Tuesday, April 11, 2023, at Wrightsville Manor following an extended illness.

Mrs. Claxton was born August 13, 1936 in Kite, to Goldman Tillman Lee and Veola Holder Lee.  She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Bobby Joe Claxton, brothers Edward, Hubert and Billy Lee, and her son-in-law, Reverend Allen Meeks.  Mrs. Claxton was retired after working for over three decades in the textile industry. She was a charter member of the Kite Church of God. Dedicated to her faith, Mrs. Claxton served in numerous capacities at her beloved church over the years including as a Sunday School teacher and choir member.

The loving mother’s family meant everything to her.  Mrs. Claxton was also the epitome of a true southern hostess. Her welcoming, typically immaculate home was a frequent gathering spot for extended family members, friends, and visiting ministers. Fun-loving with a sly sense of humor, Mrs. Claxton regularly treated her guests to laughter and good food. Whenever someone came over, Mrs. Claxton gave them the royal treatment. Always efficient, she could cook a feast for guests in less time than many people could decide on a menu and get out their cooking tools. This talented lady could cook and bake almost anything she set her mind to. Mrs. Claxton was especially known for her chocolate and caramel cakes, biscuits, Brunswick stew, and dumplings. When she discovered people’s favorite dish, she would be sure they got it the next time they ate with her.

The doting grandmother loved to shop for clothes. She couldn’t resist a good sale. Mrs. Claxton also adored spending time tending to flowers in her yard. Roses were her favorite flower. An experienced seamstress, Mrs. Claxton sewed quilts and often mended clothing for her family. Down-to-earth and friendly, Mrs. Claxton never met a stranger. Whenever she encountered someone in need, this lovely lady was always quick to lend a helping hand. She truly embodied the Proverbs 31 woman. Mrs. Claxton will be missed by many and will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know and love her.

She is survived by daughter, Donna Claxton Meeks of Kite; brother, Novis Lee of Wadley; granddaughters, Olivia Stone (Eddie) of Brooklet and Samantha Sheffield (Patrick) of Kite; great grandson, Zane Stone; several nieces, nephews and many friends.
