Obituary

Mrs. Betty Rachels Flanders, 75, of Tarrytown passed away Sunday, May 2, 2021 at Community Hospice in Vidalia following an extended illness.

 

Mrs. Flanders was born December 30, 1945 in Waynesboro to the late Delmer Ellis Rachels and Jessie Davis Rachels.  She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jimmy Flanders; siblings; John Wesley Rachels, Delmer Ellis Rachels, and Gloria Rachels Hall. Mrs. Flanders graduated from Berkley County High School, Monk’s Corner, South Carolina in 1964.  After raising her family, she went back to school and graduated from George Southern University with a degree in Business Administration.  She worked for the Department of Family and Children’s Services for sixteen years. Mrs. Flanders was a member of Swainsboro First Baptist Church where in the past she taught a children’s Sunday School class and co-taught an adult Sunday School class with her beloved husband, Jimmy.  She was a member of the GLAD Garden Club and Women of Mission (Elmira Black) organization.  Her hobbies included painting portraits and landscapes (favorite medium oil) and writing poetry and short stories about her experiences and family.  She was a master storyteller that entertained all who would listen.

 

Survivors include her sons, Patrick Cooke of Soperton, Jim (Cindy) Flanders of Woodstock; daughters, Patricia (Glenn) Brinson of Soperton, Kay (Raybon) Wilson of Swainsboro; granddaughters, Dr. Tayler Brinson of Augusta, Andi Brinson of Soperton, Kathryn (Jason) Prothro of Thomasville, Britt Flanders of Woodstock; grandson, Geoffery (Megan) Cameron of Madison, Alabama; 3 great-grandchildren; sister, Emily Bell of Locus Grove; brother, Jerry Rachels of Houston, Texas; several nieces, nephews and many friends.

 

Graveside Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, May 6, 2021 at Lake Cemetery in Metter with Reverend Casey Shaw and Ms. Carol Youmans officiating.
