Camilla Braswell Obituary

Mrs. Camilla Iris Braswell passed away on February 28, 2023 in Milledgeville, Georgia, after a long battle with multiple health issues.  She was preceded in death by her loving parents, Hilda Dantzler Jackson and E. L. Jackson, her brother Teddy Jackson, her loving husband Walter Hugh Braswell, her son Walter Lanier Braswell, and her grandson Michael Cameron Braswell.

Survivors include her brother Alan Jackson and her sister-in-law Ilona Jackson.  She also leaves behind a daughter Susan Granich, her son Michael Hugh Braswell (Linda), grandchildren Matthew Braswell (Catina), Joshua Braswell (Kelsey), Kirbi Lamb (Russell), and Kelli Mendieta (Grayson), as well as a host of loving great-grandchildren, including two who will be born soon and will be blessed by the stories of “Mema”. Nieces, nephews, a host of loving friends, and very special “adopted children” will miss her loving companionship.  Her heart and soul were her family, her friends and her “adopted children”, as well as her canine companion, Baxter were all “family”.

She was a “city girl”, born in Charleston, SC.  The family moved to this area when her father was transferred to Swainsboro, where she attended Swainsboro High School.  She excelled in sports and played on the women’s basketball team.  She made many lifetime friends at Swainsboro High, where she met the love of her life, Hugh Braswell.

“Miss Iris” and “Mr. Hugh” attended and cherished Calvary United Methodist Church.  They loved to travel and were blessed to have seen much of American and Europe.  “Miss Iris” made friends wherever she was, and she loved them all from the very start.  She was also an accomplished artist and a savior/mother to the many stray animals she nursed back to health over the years.  Squirrels, raccoons, owls, skunks, deer, birds, turtles, and countless other animals felt the touch of her loving hands.

Services will be held at Calvary United Methodist Church in Swainsboro on Sunday, March 5th at 2:30 p.m.

Upon her request, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the fund set up for her deceased grandson’s soon-to-be-born, Waylon Cameron Braswell, or Calvary United Methodist Church.  This fund is set up at Durden Banking Company.  She dearly loved flowers but valued her family and friends more.

The family wishes to thank all of those who let “Miss Iris” become a part of their own families.  They didn’t have much choice in the matter because if she liked you, she loved you, and that was that.  She was a force to be reckoned with.  Camilla Iris Braswell was like a comforting blanket.  She provided warmth and comfort even through her own struggles and losses.

Our family thanks all of you who have allowed her to have such a wonderful and blessed life.  You were all a blessing to her and to those of us left behind.  We love you all as she did.
