Obituary

Mr. Charles Archer Johnson, 82, of Canoochee passed away Monday, August 14, 2023, at his residence following an extended illness.

Charles was born April 14, 1941, to the late Theo Madison Johnson and Bonnie Lou Archer Johnson.  He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Reverend Jim Johnson.  Charles was a member of Canoochee Missionary Baptist Church. He lived out every lesson he taught.  A man who loved the Lord, his family, his church, and simple living.

He was a deacon at Canoochee Missionary Baptist Church where he served our Lord with a servant’s heart as a Sunday School teacher and song leader.

A man not afraid to speak up and stand up for what’s right, for himself, or for his family.  A brave man. A man with his priorities in order. A smart man. A kind and gentle man. How could someone be so tough and so gentle simultaneously - oh, but he was.

A man who somehow made the same twenty jokes hilarious with each retelling. His family will forever love a green sports coat, a fishing pole, a vegetable garden, a shirt with a pocket, a boiled Easter Egg, a western, a nap with a baby, hymns, Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, Conway Twitty, reading the classifieds, John Wayne, and a Gideon’s Bible.

Charles didn’t hunt, golf, or watch football.  He was a husband, a daddy, and a follower of Christ. He planted. He harvested. He served. He fixed things.

A husband for 62 years, he loved and served Mary with all his heart.

A man who never bragged on himself and just snickered the most precious crooked smile when others bragged on him.

Charles didn’t just sing the hymns - he lived them.  He was amazed by grace, cherished the old rugged cross, blessed the name, awaited the day that he would lay his burdens at Calvary, and prayed in the garden alone.

A sinner saved only because of the work of the cross.

He is survived by his wife, Mary W. Johnson of Canoochee; son, Darin Johnson of Evans; daughters, Tammy Gray (Milton) of Swainsboro; Tonya Torek (Tyler) of Waynesboro; brother, Marvin G. Johnson (Gail) of Canoochee; grandchildren, Joey Johnson, Tiffany Rahl (B.J.), Channing Rowell (Dustin), Brittany Gray, Chad Johnson, Seth Torek, Drew Torek; great-grandchildren, Morgan Rahl, Bailey Rowell, Reeze Rahl, Elin Rowell, Eryn Johnson; several nieces, nephews and many friends.

Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, August 16, 2023, at Canoochee Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Mark Wiggins and Pastor Mark Sweat officiating.

Interment will follow in Eastbrook Cemetery & Mausoleum in Swainsboro.
