Jessie Dell (Strobridge) Samples

Mrs. Jessie Dell Samples, 93, of Swainsboro passed away Sunday, April 10, 2022, at Emanuel County Nursing Home following extensive time in hospice care.

Mrs. Samples was born May 10, 1928, in Emanuel County to Jesse Strobridge and Millie Brown Strobridge. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John C. Samples, Sr.; son, John C. Samples, Jr.; daughters, Linda Samples, Sophia Neal; sisters, Adell Robinson and Finer Strobridge. Mrs. Samples married John C. Samples, Sr. on February 4, 1947, and they raised eight children: Mary, John, Jr., Nancy, Jerome, Linda, Christopher, Andrea, and Sophia. She volunteered at Emanuel Medical Center for many years, handcrafting the infamous “yo-yo” quilt and pillow and her awesome homemade biscuits. Mrs. Samples was a dedicated mother, first and foremost. She treasured her children and embraced every moment with them. She especially loved her role as “Nana”. She made friends everywhere and her role as neighborhood babysitter only extended her family as “Nana”. Mrs. Samples was a longtime member of St. James Missionary Baptist Church, a very special place that was near and dear to her heart. She was a member of the Progressive Ladies’ Club, where she proudly reigned at the annual Christmas parties, surrounded by her friends, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was also a member of Greater St. James Missionary Baptist Church for over 80 years.

Survivors include her sons, Jerome Samples of Macon, Christopher Samples (Roxanne) of Swainsboro; daughters, Mary Strobridge and Nancy Shimoyama, both of Swainsboro, Andrea Samples-Elliott (Steven) of Loganville; son-in-law, Tom Neal; daughter-in-law, Frances Samples; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-greatgrandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Graveside Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 16, 2022, at Swainsboro City Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. Friday, April 15, 2022, at Chapman Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Mason Brothers.

The family would like to extend their thanks to the Emanuel County Nursing Home staff for their kindness and professionalism during Mrs. Samples’ stay. The tenderness and sensitivity they showed for Mrs. Samples at the end of her life is something the family will never forget.
