Jonathan Ivey Scott Obituary

Mr. Jonathan Ivey “Big John” Scott, 56, of Swainsboro passed away Monday, October 18, 2021, at his residence following an extended illness.

 

Mr. Scott was born August 13, 1965, in Swainsboro to the late Thomas David Scott, Sr. and Lois Riner Scott. He was preceded in death by his parents. Jonathan went to Swainsboro High School and was a member of the Swainsboro Matching Band.  He graduated in 1983 and attended Troy State in Troy, Alabama He graduated in 1987.  He returned to Swainsboro and was a Probation/Correctional officer for 30 years with the State of GA. After retiring from the State of GA, he worked for the Emanuel County District Attorney’s Office and transported equipment for Boatright Equipment. During this time, he also enjoyed serving as a “water meter reader” for Summertown.

 

Jonathan “Jon Boy” was well known, admired, and loved by so many in his family and community. His professional career also consisted of a volunteer firefighter/ Chief of Summertown Fire Dept., and first responder.  He served his local churches by playing the trumpet along with Bill Sasser at First Baptist Church of Swainsboro and in the Columbia County Civic Orchestra in Augusta, GA. He also served as one of the youth group leaders at Friendship Freewill Baptist Church, Twin City GA.

 

During Jon Boy’s free time he was always on the go and lived life to the fullest! He was a member of the Thursday Thunder Motorcycle Group where he enjoyed cruising around on his Harley and participated in poker runs for charity.  He was an avid grill master and competed with Lisa in many states, (Georgia, Florida, and Tennessee) including state-wide BBQ/grilling competitions where they won many awards over years. Most recently, in May ‘21, they traveled to Tennessee for a competition. Jonathan also enjoyed traveling, hunting, and camping with Lisa and his grandsons. In 2016, they started Big Jon’s BBQ Catering Company where he loved to serve food to events big and small.

 

Survivors include his wife, Lisa D. Scott of Swainsboro; daughters, Brandy Snyder (Greg) of Pensacola, FL, Randi Mills (Josh McCoy) of Swainsboro; grandchildren, Christian Brendel, Jake Mills, Hunter Mills, all of Swainsboro; brothers, David Scott (Nancy) of Lilburn, James Scott of Adairsville; brother-in-law, Joseph Snowden (Angie); sister-in-law, Sheila Miller (Johnny); nieces, Heather (Chad), Heidi (Ryan); nephews, Thomas David Scott, III Sarah, Kiari, and Thomas and Clinton Daniel Scott (Catie) and Saydee and Clint Scott; many other family members and friends.

 

Funeral Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, October 21, 2021, at Swainsboro First Baptist Church with Pastor Will Jackson officiating.

 

Interment will follow in the Swainsboro City Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday, October 20, 2021, at Chapman Funeral Home.

 

Pallbearers are Billy Cavannah, Nicky Drake, Cody Cavannah, John Moore, Al Evans, Tal Wimberly, Allen Moore, and Kevin Strange.

 

Honorary Pallbearers are the Original Thursday Thunders, Enforcers MC, Summertown Fire Department, Department of Corrections: Parole and Probation, Emanuel County Sherriff’s Office, and Georgia BBQ Association.
