Lenard Coney, Sr.

Mr. Lenard Coney, Sr., 81, of Garfield passed away Friday, March 6, 2020 at his residence following an extended illness.

Mr. Coney was born August 19, 1938 in Metter to the late Dave Coney and Frankie Williams Coney.  He is preceded in death by his parents; daughters, Brenda Gail Coney and Angela Annette Coney; brothers Freddie Lee Coney and William Coney. Mr. Coney was a righteous man who loved his family dearly. He was hardworking and made sure his family never went without. Mr. Coney had many trades and hobbies. He could build anything he wanted from his own home to his own personal grill to barbeque. Mr. Coney’s garden was his personal happy place. He would spend every evening after work making sure his crops were growing. By 11 a.m., you would hear his truck pull up in the yard and he would come in to wash up and Rose (as he would call her) would be sitting dinner on the table. This was his weekly routine. On Sunday mornings, he would watch Pastor T.D. Jakes and on Monday nights, he had to watch wrestling while yelling at the TV. Mr. Coney gave the best advice, and whether you wanted to listen or not, trust he never led you wrong. He was the true example of hard work, dedication, and a man of God. Mr. Coney was a member of Mercer Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Rosetta Sapp Coney of Garfield; son, Lenard Coney, Jr. (Ada) of Swainsboro; daughters, Glenda Jean Coney of Jacksonville, FL, Sonya Louise Coney of Swainsboro, Sharon Denise Owens (TJ) of Dumfries, VA, and Dedrie Matthews (Dennis) of Adrian; brother, Dave Coney, Jr. (Nellie) of Twin City; sisters, Avie Lanier of Plainfield, NJ, Jennie Ruth Parrish of Orlando, FL, and Mary Lanier of Garfield; 20 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, and many friends. 

Funeral Services will be on Wednesday, March 11, 2020 at 11 a.m. at Mercer Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Charles Weaver and Minister Cecil Weaver officiating.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, March 10, 2020 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Chapman Funeral Home. 

Interment will follow at Mercer Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
